About Manumade
by Sara Greet Gilis
For years I lived in the world of the arts. As a sculptor and draftsman, I exhibited in venues in Belgium and abroad. I participated in art projects and taught model drawing at the art college in Antwerp.
In the meantime, I had a beautiful daughter, Elea. A life in art and being a single parent, that was a challenge. And as is the case in the arts, periods of bustle and success alternated with periods of calm and bales of hay blown by. When a world epidemic caused budget cuts, I lost my job as a teacher. Spicy, with a kid and an artistic egg to lay. But when a door closes I like to open a window.
I returned to my first loves: clay and drawing and combined that with my long-standing fascination for tiles. And so suddenly - and a bit to my surprise - I created my job! The almost forgotten craft of tile maker.
In my home studio in Antwerp, I make unique, handmade tiles, for both individuals and professionals. Everything starts with the design of a tile. Then I print them piece by piece. Every tile passes through my hands, no tile is therefore 100% the same, and those imperfections bring them to life. After the rough baking, the tiles get a layer with my self-mixed glazes. Both the design and the colours are therefore unique.
Are you looking for an eye-catcher for your home or business? Would you like to see your design realized? In addition to my regular collections, I also do custom design.
